Principal Software Engineer - Search Algorithms - Elasticsearch

About the role

Elastic is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to lead the development of vector similarity search within Elasticsearch. You will join a globally‑distributed team that builds core search features, improves existing functionality, and contributes to the broader Lucene ecosystem.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement new vector search algorithms and data structures to deliver industry‑leading speed and relevance.
• Maintain and enhance existing vector similarity features, fixing bugs and improving code readability.
• Collaborate with engineers worldwide, reviewing code, triaging community pull requests, and guiding cross‑team initiatives.
• Invent or adopt algorithms (e.g., HNSW, IVF) and work close to OS and hardware when needed.

Required profile

• Proven experience with vector similarity, vector databases, and large‑scale search platforms.
• Strong autonomy in taking projects from design through delivery, including technical design and teamwork.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, especially for asynchronous, remote collaboration.
• Track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimise code.

Required skills

• Core Java (modern, idiomatic, 99.8% of Elasticsearch codebase).
• Elasticsearch, Lucene, and related search technologies.
• Experience with HNSW, IVF or similar vector‑search algorithms.
• Familiarity with data‑storage systems such as Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra.
