AI Systems Engineer

About the role

We are DEUS EX MACHINA, an AI systems company focused on food, nutrition and life‑sciences. The AI Systems Engineer will design and build end‑to‑end AI‑driven platforms, integrating data pipelines, APIs, agentic workflows and cloud infrastructure into a single reliable system.

Key responsibilities

• Build agentic AI systems using LLMs, retrieval, tools, memory and human‑in‑the‑loop patterns, deciding when agents or deterministic software are appropriate.
• Develop production‑grade backend services, data infrastructure, event‑driven workflows and cloud components.
• Design and implement reliable APIs, micro‑services, and distributed components that connect models, data and applications.
• Create and operate data pipelines for structured, unstructured and scientific data, handling ingestion, transformation, indexing, lineage and quality controls.
• Design retrieval and knowledge architectures using relational databases, vector stores, search systems and knowledge graphs.

Required profile

• At least 2 years of hands‑on experience building production systems in Python or a comparable language.
• Proven experience with backend systems, APIs, micro‑services and data‑intensive applications.
• Practical knowledge of modern AI systems, including LLM APIs, RAG, embeddings, tool use and agentic workflows.
• Experience with data engineering tasks such as SQL, data modelling, ETL/ELT and pipeline orchestration.
• Strong English communication skills and ability to explain technical decisions to cross‑functional teams.
