Senior Platform Engineer

About the role

As a Senior Platform Engineer at Welcome Pickups you will ensure the platform that powers our travel‑tech service is reliable, fast, scalable and secure. You will work across product teams, own key architecture decisions and drive the technical roadmap together with the Core product manager.

Key responsibilities

• Define and monitor reliability targets (SLAs/SLOs) for bookings, ride matching and payments, and lead incident response.
• Lead architecture and performance optimisation for a large Ruby on Rails codebase, background jobs, and a fast‑growing PostgreSQL/PostGIS database.
• Design and evolve Azure‑based infrastructure, enforce security best practices and prepare the platform for PCI, GDPR and future SOC 2/ISO 27001 compliance.
• Improve developer experience by enhancing CI/CD pipelines, internal tooling and zero‑downtime deployment processes.
• Maintain a technical backlog, write runbooks and collaborate with product managers to prioritise technical debt, security and performance work.

Required profile

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with strong backend and systems focus.
• BS/MS in Computer Science or related field.
• Proven track record of operating and scaling production systems at large scale.

Required skills

• Ruby on Rails, Sidekiq, Puma, PostgreSQL (including query/index tuning, replication, large‑table migrations) and PostGIS.
• Message brokers such as RabbitMQ, search engines like Elasticsearch and caching with Redis.
• Cloud platforms – Azure (primary), AWS S3 and Google Cloud.
• Containerisation and infrastructure‑as‑code with Docker, CircleCI and zero‑downtime deployment techniques.
• Observability tools (New Relic, Rollbar, Mixpanel) and incident management processes.
• Security fundamentals: access control, secrets management and compliance awareness.
