International Expert – Guidance Factsheets for Climate Indicators

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks an International Expert to develop Guidance Factsheets for Candidate Common Indicators (cCI) 42 and 43, covering coastal flooding and burnt forest areas. The consultant will define Good Environmental Status (GES), set targets, and propose assessment methods to support regional monitoring and policy discussions.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare Guidance Factsheets for cCI 42 (coastal flooding) and cCI 43 (forest fire impacts).
• Draft a regional definition of Good Environmental Status for both indicators.
• Propose GES targets and thresholds aligned with Mediterranean Action Plan objectives.
• Provide technical inputs for IMAP/EcAp governance discussions, especially within CORMON on Coast and Hydrography.
• Collaborate with UNEP, Contracting Parties, and regional experts to ensure scientific robustness.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in environmental science, climate change, marine/coastal ecology, or a related field.
• Proven experience in developing environmental indicators, assessment frameworks, or guidance documents.
• Familiarity with the Mediterranean Action Plan, Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme (IMAP), and ecosystem‑based approaches.
• Strong analytical and scientific writing skills, with ability to synthesize complex data into clear guidance.
