Senior Software Engineer - Streams - Observability

About the role

The Observability Streams team at Elastic builds a unified data pipeline that connects data sources to destinations, controlling how it is processed and routed. The Streams Backend team owns the backend services behind this pipeline, including Logstash, the open-source streaming ETL tool, and contributes to the OpenTelemetry Collector. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Streams Backend team, you will help design and develop new features across the Streams Backend service and Logstash, contribute to the OpenTelemetry Collector and support users and enterprise customers. The team is distributed globally and communicates mainly through Slack, GitHub, email and Zoom.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement new features for Logstash and its plugins in Java and JRuby
• Design, build and operate core backend services for the Streams program in Golang
• Add features and contribute to the OpenTelemetry Collector in Golang
• Solve hard distributed systems problems at scale
• Maintain, update and improve existing code and dependencies while keeping automated test coverage
• Engage with public GitHub repositories and community forums
• Review pull requests and give guidance to peers
• Work with other teams on product goals and collaborate with the support organization, including an on-call rotation

Required profile

• Ability to work in a remote-first, highly distributed environment with strong verbal and written communication
• Analytical, problem-solving and debugging skills, critical thinking, autonomy and adaptability
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems and optimize code, while owning the final outcomes

Required skills

• Expertise in at least one of Java, Golang and Ruby, with willingness to learn the others and switch between codebases
• Bonus points: familiarity with observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, hands-on Docker and Kubernetes, JRuby, open source development, stream processing platforms like Kafka, databases such as Postgres or MySQL, and the Elastic stack
