Safety Engineer (Construction Site)

About the role

Hellas Gold, a subsidiary of Eldorado Gold Corporation, operates the Kassandra Mines in Northeast Halkidiki, including the Skouries Project. It is recruiting a Safety Engineer for its premises in Chalkidiki, reporting to the Safety Supervisor of the Health & Safety department in Skouries. The role involves strong on-site presence across active construction areas and oversight of contractor safety.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain continuous field presence on active construction sites, focusing on critical, high-risk and priority activities.
• Lead, coach and guide contractor Safety Supervisors so that their workforces are supervised effectively for HSE.
• Ensure compliance with Hellas Gold safety standards, project HSE requirements, approved procedures and applicable legislation across all contractors.
• Take part in daily toolbox talks and construction coordination meetings, making sure risks, interfaces, priorities and controls are clear.
• Review upcoming works and short-term plans to spot high-risk activities and confirm that HSE resources, permits, procedures, risk assessments and controls are available.
• Collaborate with contractors on method statements, risk assessments/JHAs and safe work procedures for hazardous or non-routine activities.
• Verify critical controls for high-risk activities such as lifting, work at height, excavation, confined spaces, energization/LOTO, hot work and mobile equipment.
• Carry out regular field inspections, task observations and safety interactions, and exercise stop-work authority when risks are imminent or unacceptable.
• Monitor contractor compliance with permit-to-work requirements and other site control systems.
• Lead incident, near-miss and high-potential event investigations, and track contractor safety performance metrics, reporting trends to Construction Management and contractor leadership.
• Coordinate with Construction, HSE, Quality and Engineering teams and promote consistent safety reporting and incident learning.

Required profile

• University degree in Mine Engineering and membership of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE).
• Minimum 7 years of HSE experience in construction, mining, heavy industry or other high-risk environments.
• Experience supervising or coordinating contractor HSE teams, preferably on large multidisciplinary construction projects.
• Recognized professional HSE qualification preferred.
• Valid driver's licence category B.

Required skills

• Hazard identification, risk assessment, JHA/JSA and method statement review, permit-to-work systems and critical control verification.
• Incident investigation, root-cause analysis and corrective action management.
• Safety inspections, toolbox talks, emergency preparedness and HSE KPI monitoring and reporting.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HSE reporting systems.
