Senior Java Engineer – Core & Infra for Elasticsearch

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch team, focusing on core platform and infrastructure functionality. The role involves building, maintaining, and securing shared components that enable developers to extend Elasticsearch.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to large, impactful projects that evolve the core infrastructure of Elasticsearch.
• Design and implement new horizontally‑scalable features and APIs.
• Identify automation opportunities to increase developer productivity.
• Resolve performance, concurrency, and stability issues.
• Improve operation and observability of Elasticsearch cloud systems.
• Collaborate openly with the ES team, users, and related open‑source projects.
• Support support engineers with complex problems.
• Own end‑to‑end operational investigations.

Required profile

• Experience crafting APIs and reasoning through trade‑offs.
• Strong knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and core Java.
• Hands‑on experience with low‑level Java concepts such as concurrency, parallelism, and classloaders.
• Proficiency with CI/CD systems and practices (Buildkite, Argo CD, GitOps).
• Proven ability to lead large‑scale projects across engineering teams.
• Willingness to dive into new issues and ask for help when needed.
• Track record of using AI to accelerate development and debugging.
• Ability to collaborate across functions and work autonomously in a distributed team.
